Even the kitchen sink?

One of the things that will be familiar to any working photographer is the amount of kit we take out on a shoot. Often I end up taking out far more than I need/or rather end up using.

It can appear a little strange to the non-photographer, I mean, how much kit can you really need...? Below is a list of some of the kit I'd typically take out on a shoot:

  • Cameras and lenses
  • Spare batteries (lots of)
  • Big studio lights for location use
  • Smaller strobes for general off camera use and when space is at a premium and I need the flexibility of iTTL and CLS.
  • Softboxes
  • Light stands and spare light stands
  • Gaffer tape and normal tape
  • Power leads
  • Ladders
  • Reflectors
  • Filters
  • Tripods
  • iPod
  • Sat Nav
  • Map
  • Flask of tea or coffee
  • Walking boots (for the middle of a field is the only place to get the shot)

To the non-photographer it can appear unnecessary, indeed it is a lot of kit, but it's often said that having all the kit in the world is no use - if it's in the studio when you're on location. Better to be safe than sorry!
